Writing of Wrongs

This design is a response to a competition for a Holocaust Memorial sited on the ocean side of the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The concept is inspired by a Jewish poet, who when dragged away by the Nazis, was exclaiming “WRITE JEWS WRITE”. The written accounts of the holocaust connect with the essence of our humanity and distill resolve in our souls. The multitude of pages preserved documented and proliferated could not be tracked down, could not be locked away, and will continue to influence generations of individuals in a way that no person or group of persons could ever contain. The accounts serve as reminders of countless others whose names will never again be spoken, and whose stories will never be told. They can be seen. In between the pages of the memorial there are silhouettes of people. Figures visible in the voids. These forms honor those who are missing. The descendants of those who should be walking around the memorial. Those whose names we shall never know, who were wrongfully taken from the world. The full scale figures relay this absence created by these events that happened long ago in a situation we have a hard time imagining today. Yet, in the memorial you relate to its humanity and feel it’s reality.
